Escuela de Idiomas "Nerja" is one of the Costa del Sol's most consistently recommended Spanish schools — not because it is large, but because it doesn't try to be. The school occupies two addresses in the old quarter of Nerja: the main academic building at Calle Almirante Ferrándiz, 73, and the reception at Club Costa Nerja, Calle San Juan, 39 — the school's own residence, a two-minute walk away. The timetable runs mornings and afternoons, five days a week (Monday–Friday). New students arrive on Monday mornings for placement testing and orientation.

The daily timetable for morning courses: 9:00–10:45 (comprehension and interpretation); coffee break 10:45–11:10; 11:10–12:55 (practice and communication, listening, culture). Super Intensive students continue 13:00–14:30 for consolidation. Afternoon courses mirror this structure from 15:00 to 18:55, with an activity programme from 19:00.

Intensive Spanish (20 hours/week) — The standard course. Four 50-minute lessons in the morning or afternoon, five days a week. Maximum 10 per group. All levels A1–C2. Any Monday start; beginners twice per month. Duration 1–32 weeks. The course covers speaking, reading, writing and listening using communicative methodology, with cultural seminars built in at no extra cost.

Individual Intensive / One-to-One (20 or 30 hours/week) — A fully custom course for students with specific professional or personal needs. Business, corporate affairs, tourism, banking, medicine, legal — or preparation for DELE/SIELE and university entry examinations. Also the right format for the Diploma in Commercial Spanish issued by the Madrid Chamber of Commerce. Duration 1–12 weeks. All ages and levels.

Super Intensive + DELE Preparation (30 hours/week) — The standard Intensive 20-hour course plus 5 hours of private tuition specifically targeted at DELE or SIELE examination preparation. DELE is the official Spanish-as-foreign-language diploma granted by the Instituto Cervantes on behalf of Spain's Ministry of Education. The school is an authorised examination centre for all six DELE levels (A1–C2) and SIELE.

Idiomas Nerja is best measured by what you can actually do at the end of the stay, not just by how many lessons you book. The course should help you speak more confidently, understand everyday language faster, build a stronger grammar base and use the language in real situations around Nerja.

Club Costa Nerja is the school's own Moorish-Andalusian style residence, located in the Old Quarter at Calle San Juan, 39 — a two-minute walk from the main school building and a few minutes from the beach. It has 16 rooms and 6 studios, with a terrace, swimming pool, sea and mountain views, lift, air conditioning, heating and solar energy. A cafeteria, bookshop, study room and free WiFi are available to all students. Minimum age 18.

Standard rooms — Single or double. Breakfast included Monday–Saturday. Bathroom, TV, free WiFi. Cleaning Monday–Friday; towels changed twice a week, bed linen once a week.

Premium rooms — Single or double. Breakfast included Monday–Saturday. All standard room features plus minibar and kettle.

Studios — Six self-contained studios with sitting area, open-plan kitchen, modern bathroom with shower, flat-screen TV and free WiFi. Separate sleeping area. Weekly linen change; optional cleaning service.

Nerja — the town, the coast, the context

Nerja is a whitewashed clifftop village 50 kilometres east of Málaga, population approximately 22,000. Its defining landmark is the Balcón de Europa — a palm-lined promenade that juts into the Mediterranean from the old town, with views east and west along the coast. Below are a series of small beaches, the most famous being Playa Burriana, known for its unusually clear water. The old quarter is compact, walkable, and genuinely Andalusian in character.

The school organises a structured programme of cultural and leisure activities. The Nerja Caves (Cuevas de Nerja) contain some of the world's oldest cave paintings — a UNESCO-recognised prehistoric site of extraordinary significance — and are a short drive from town. Getting there and practical information

From Málaga Airport to Nerja: Bus from the airport to Málaga Central Bus Station (every 20 minutes, approximately 20 minutes). From Málaga bus station, buses depart for Nerja approximately every hour; journey time 1 hour. Total journey from airport to Nerja: approximately 1h20 by public transport. First day arrival: New you should arrive at Club Costa Nerja, Calle San Juan, 39, on Monday at 08:30 and check in at the reception desk. If the school has received your pre-test, you will be called for a brief oral interview (approximately 10 minutes). If not, you complete a written test first. After all interviews, students receive their timetable, level, group, teacher names and classroom assignment, and morning-timetable students begin class that morning.

DELE and SIELE — examination preparation

The DELE (Diploma de Español como Lengua Extranjera) is the internationally recognised official Spanish language certificate granted by the Instituto Cervantes on behalf of Spain's Ministry of Education. Idiomas Nerja is an authorised DELE examination centre — you can both prepare and sit the examination at the school.

Six levels are available: A1 (Breakthrough, ~2 weeks / 40 hours), A2 (Waystage, ~2 weeks / 40 hours), B1 (Threshold, ~4 weeks / 80 hours), B2 (Vantage, ~4 weeks / 80 hours), C1 (Effective Operational Proficiency, ~8 weeks / 160 hours), C2 (Mastery, ~8 weeks / 160 hours). The SIELE examination, jointly developed by the Instituto Cervantes, UNAM (Mexico), Universidad de Buenos Aires and Universidad de São Paulo, is a digital assessment covering the full C1 range in a single test — increasingly used by universities and employers as an alternative to DELE.
