One SIOC Language Labs system

The original Labs remain your grammar, dialogue and situation-language workspace. This practice layer adds the daily routine, placement self-check, arrival packs, paper-card memory system, speaking prompts and exam-focused micro-tasks.

Spaced Repetition — No Apps Required

A self-contained method using paper cards or a simple notebook. Works offline, costs nothing, and fits the daily 10–15 minute vocabulary block.

The principle (not the tool)

Review each item just before you would forget it. That timing strengthens memory more than cramming or random review.

You only need:

  • Small cards (or a notebook divided into sections)
  • A simple schedule
  • Honest self-testing — look at the prompt, say the answer out loud, then check

Method 1 — Paper Leitner boxes (recommended)

Five boxes, envelopes, or notebook sections.

1
Box 1 — Every day. New cards start here. Correct → Box 2. Wrong → stay in Box 1.
2
Box 2 — Every 2 days. Correct → Box 3. Wrong → Box 1.
3
Box 3 — Every 4 days. Correct → Box 4. Wrong → Box 1.
4
Box 4 — Every 7 days. Correct → Box 5. Wrong → Box 1.
5
Box 5 — Every 14 days (or monthly). Wrong → Box 1.
Daily routine: Always do Box 1. On the right days, also do Boxes 2–5. Use a simple calendar mark.

What goes on each card

  • Front: Your language or a situation cue — e.g. “I’d like a coffee, please”
  • Back: Full phrase in the target language — e.g. “Vorrei un caffè, per favore”
  • Prefer phrases over isolated words. Say the answer out loud before flipping.

Method 2 — Notebook schedule

One notebook, no loose cards.

  • Write 8–12 new phrases per day on a dated page.
  • Review each page: next day → 3 days → 7 days → 14 days → 30 days.
  • Cover the target side, say the phrase, check. Anything wrong is rewritten onto today’s page.

Design rules

  • One idea per card.
  • Full usable phrase, not a naked word.
  • Include article/gender where the language needs it.
  • Production first: cue → target language out loud.
  • Retire cards that stay easy in Box 5 so the pack stays lean.
