How to order wine naturally in Spain
You do not need encyclopedic wine knowledge to order well. Start with place, style, budget and food, then let the server help with producer and vintage.

A comfortable five-step conversation
- Say whether you want red, white, rosé, sparkling or something sweet.
- Name a region or appellation if you have one in mind.
- Describe the style: lighter, fuller, drier, fresher, more aromatic.
- Say what you are eating or what budget range you prefer.
- Ask whether a suitable bottle is available by the glass if you want to taste first.
Welcoming wine etiquette: it is completely normal to say you are learning. A good conversation is often more useful than pretending to know every appellation.
